Afontermo Walkable application cycle for flat roofs is born

Flat roofs require special attention: in addition to thermal performance, it is essential to ensure that the deck is perfectly watertight. Afontermo® offers a low-thickness application cycle that improves winter comfort (reducing dispersion) and summer comfort (limiting overheating), but it works properly only on already “properly” waterproofed substrates.

Why choose Afontermo® on flat roofing

  • Low thickness, high comfort: improves efficiency without weighing down the structure.
  • Thermal reflectivity: reduces heat absorption in summer and heat loss in winter.
  • Compatibility with professional cycles: integrates with perimeter tapes and protective finishes.
  • Quick interventions: laying by successive coats and finishing in reflective sheathing.

Note: Afontermo® is not a waterproofing system. Waterproofing over screed must already be in place, continuous and tested.

Flat Cover - LOW

Prerequisites before starting

  • Waterproofing over screed: there must be an effective and continuous membrane.
  • Tapes and joints:
    • Perimeter tapes for water tightness at vertical/horizontal intersections.
    • Fragmentation joints in the screed and related sealing tapes.
  • Water tightness test: mandatory (on new or existing systems) prior to application of Afontermo®.
  • Existing bituminous membranes: should be removed; then make a continuous and efficient membrane system from scratch.

Recommended application cycle

1) Preparation of the substrate

  • The substrate must be dry, compact, clean and already waterproofed.
  • Restore any cracks or discontinuities in the screed according to good practice.

2) Treatment of singular points

  • Prepare the perimeter and intersections with Mapeband SA (self-adhesive elastic butyl waterproofing tape with TNT) or professional equivalents, including:
    • Corners, lapels, downspouts and through-bodies,
    • Fragmentation joints and related fittings.

3) Application of Afontermo®

  • Apply successive coats of Afontermo® until the thickness required by the project is reached (follow the data sheet).
  • Wait for the last coat todry completely before the next step.

4) Non-woven protective fabric

  • Lay the Nonwoven Fabric AFON CASA 60 g/m², turning it up on the vertical surfaces for 10-15 cm.
  • Paste the TNT with AFONGUAIN REFLEX.

5) Reflective finish and protection

  • Apply 2 coats of AFONGUAINA REFLEX, spaced 24 hours apart.
  • The finish improves reflectance, protects the loop, and contributes to durability.

Important: AFONGUAINA REFLEX does not replace the waterproofing system over screed. The latter must always ensure that the deck is watertight.

6) Construction site protection

  • Recommended over-covering during work to protect applications from weathering.

Best practices and limitations

  • Slopes and water disposal: adhere to design slopes, avoid prolonged stagnation.
  • Joints: keep them legible and properly sealed with suitable tapes.
  • Environmental conditions: apply in favorable weather conditions and in accordance with product data sheets.
  • Testing: perform and document the leak test of the waterproofing system before starting the cycle with Afontermo®.

Maintenance and inspections

  • Schedule periodic insp ections to check for: condition of lapels, integrity of joints, cleanliness of drains, any mechanical shocks or damage.
  • Promptly restore damaged areas by following the same cycle (cleaning, tapes, Afontermo®, TNT, AFONGUAIN REFLEX).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I apply Afontermo® over an existing bituminous sheathing?
No. Bituminous sheathing should be removed. A new, proven, continuous membrane waterproofing system must be constructed.

Does Afontermo® make the cover waterproof?
No. Afontermo® is part of the shallow thermal cycle. Waterproofing is only guaranteed by the membrane system over screed.

What role does AFONGUAIN REFLEX play?
It is the reflective and protective finish of the loop; it does not replace the waterproof membrane.

Do perimeter details and joints need to be treated as well?
Yes. Perimeter and joint tapes (e.g., Mapeband SA or equivalent) are essential for continuity of water tightness at critical points.

Documentation and support

For recommended thicknesses, drying times, consumption and equipment, always refer to the Technical Data Sheets of the products (Afontermo®, Nonwoven Fabric AFON CASA, AFONGUAINA REFLEX) and the waterproofing design guidelines.
